June Analogue
June 2005
Well it’s the beginning of another month. It’s hard to believe but I’m already 1/4 of the way through my year! I’ve done a number of touristy things this last month, but firstly host family news.
The middle child that I look after, Alison, had her 7th Birthday halfway through March. For her birthday party she had about 20 girls come over to the house and they made edible necklaces using red licorice and fruit loops. They taste really good! Ali’s yoga teacher also came and did yoga with all the girls. It was a really nice day.
During my weekend off in May I went on a 3 hour boat cruise around Manhattan. It was quite interesting seeing the city from the water. The boat cruise was especially for Au Pairs and it was also a dance party; so because the majority of Au Pairs are female, a bus load of navy cadets were invited. It was quite interesting talking to some of them. Unfortunately the weather was cold and wet and we could see a thunder and lightning storm over New Jersey. On the Sunday I went to Atlantic City with Jess, Sharee, Greta and a girl from England called Becky. Atlantic City is pretty much the Las Vegas of New Jersey but it has a really nice board walk. Our bus left at 8:30am and it took 2.5 hours to get there. We spent the rest of the morning and the afternoon just walking along the boardwalk and going into the stores along it. We also went into the Trump Taj Mahal Casino to see what it looked like inside. It wasn’t as flash as I expected but it was nice. On a pier across the boardwalk from the Casino was a small amusement park. So we all went on the Ferris Wheel to see Atlantic City from the ‘sky’ and Sharee and I also went on a small roller coaster - lots of fun. We were quite tired so we caught the 4:00pm bus back to NYC. It was a really awesome weekend.
A couple of weekends ago I went up the Empire State Building. It took us about 1hr and 15mins to get up to the top because first you have to line up to get into the building, then you have to line up to go through security, then line up to buy a ticket, then line up to get into a lift and finally line up to go up the final few floors! We were up there for about a ½ hour and could see about 25 miles in all directions - on a clear day you can see up to 80 miles.
Its starting to get really hot over here now. 20 - 30 o.C. at least! Most families over here belong to a beach club and my host family is no different. We went there on Memorial Day and it was really nice. There is a pool there as the ocean is too cold to swim in at the moment. You can either have a locker or a cabana and we have a locker which is just big enough to keep everything in (beach chairs, toys, bags etc) and to get changed in. The pool is a reasonable size with a shallow end and a deep end. The deep end is about 11 feet and the shallow end 3 so it is good for everybody.
A couple of weekends ago I went with Jess, Sharee, Eckard and Becky (from England) on a tour through the United Nations Headquarters. It was very interesting and probably one of the best things that I’ve done so far. We got to go inside the Security Council Chamber and the General Assembly Hall. Although the United Nations Headquarters is in Manhattan, it is not actually part of the United States of America, as soon as you enter the compound you are on International Territory. Like a lot of places over here you are allowed to take photos so I got some pretty good photos of it.
I went to the Times Square Church which was pretty good, but the church that I’ve been going to lately and have really felt welcomed and at home at is called the Journey which describes itself as a Casual, Contemporary, Christian Church. I’ve been a couple of times and will definitely go whenever I meet up with my friends in the city (which is most weekends).
Well this has taken me so long to write. I always start up then have to go and do something. So I’ll sing off now before I get sidetracked again. Hope you like the photos. Miss you all heaps.
Lots of Love and God Bless
