July Analogue

July 2005

Hi from the warm, sunny USA. Hope your not too cold over there in Kiwi-land! This last month has been quite busy with school finishing and camp starting. Both Alison and Bradley ‘graduated’ from the schools they have been attending and will be starting new schools in the fall. I got to go to both their graduation ceremonies which were really nice, they got presented with certificates and performed songs. At the end of June Emily left for camp. She has gone to a camp in Maine which is about a 6 hour drive from New York, it goes for 7 weeks and she is really enjoying it. Visiting weekend is the 23rd and 24th so we will be going up to see her then. It has made my job a bit easier only having to look after 2 children instead of 3! Bradley is also going to a camp, but his is a day camp at the beach club. It runs from 11:00am to 3:30pm and they do a whole lot of stuff there; Bradley has made a lot of new friends and is really enjoying himself. At the moment Alison is just hanging out with Suzie during the day, but she will start a day camp over the next couple of weeks.
A couple of weekends ago I had to say good-bye to Becky (from England) as she has finished her year. But as soon as one person leaves others arrive. So I want to take the time to say thank-you to everyone who has been praying that I would find a Christian friend over here and to tell you your prayers have been answered. Sarah arrived almost a month ago and us meeting is a miracle as we do not live in the same county. A couple who I know in Matamata went to New Plymouth to visit some friends, when they went to church with them a girl (Sarah) in that congregation was being farewelled because she was leaving to come to New York to spend a year working as an Au Pair. This couple told Mum and Dad, who got the girls parents contact details, rang them and gave them my email address. They gave my email address to Sarah who emailed me and asked me if I’d found a church. So we met up and are now going to church together! Then a girl called Heather arrived, she is living in the same county as Sarah and when she found out that Sarah is a Christian and went to church she was like "Me too!" So now I have 2 great Christian Friends!
I was shocked when I went to get a haircut. I had my hair washed, a couple of inches cut off, and it dried and it cost me $US45 which is like $NZ60 - 70! I’m NOT going back there again!
For my weekend off in June I went up to Connecticut to stay with Julie and Omega Edwards. Those of you who go to Matamata Baptist will know who I’m talking about, for those of you who don’t: Julie was a missionary who went from Matamata Baptist to work in Mozambique. While there she met an American who was on a medical team. To cut a long story short they got married and moved to the States while Omega finishes off his study to become a Dr. It was a really nice weekend since I just needed to get away from everything here. We had a BBQ at the beach which was nice, but the best this was getting to know Julie better. It was a really nice relaxing couple of days.
July 4th was Independence Day. I spent the day at the beach with my host family then at 5:30pm when I finished work I headed into the city and met up with Jess, Sharee, Sarah, and a girl from Germany called Angie. We met up so we could all go together to see the 4th July Fireworks. They were set off from 6 barges; 3 in the river between Manhattan and Long Island and 3 down at South Port near the Statue of Liberty. We were watching the ones between Manhattan and Long Island. 1000 shells a minute were set off and they went off straight for 30 minutes! It was amazing to watch, the show was the largest in the USA that night and was the 2nd largest 4th July Firework display (largest was in year 2000). Some of the Bangs were so loud that the ground shook and all the bangs were louder than they seemed ‘cause they echoed through all the skyscrapers! It was such a fun night.
I have just brought my first digital camera. It’s a Canon A95 and I paid $US360.62 for it and got the camera, a case, a 512meg card, rechargeable batteries with a European adapter, a N.Z. adapter, and editing software. That’s about $NZ540, but I’ve seen the just the camera advertised for that price in N.Z.!
Last Saturday it was Jess’ Birthday, so we celebrated it on Sunday. We went boating in Central Park, which is really relaxing but at the same time kind of like rowing on an oversized duck pond! I’m glad Dad taught me how to row in the estuary at Athenree, made getting around a whole lot easier! Then we went to "Bubba Gump Shrimp and Co" for dinner. These restaurants opened up all over the States after the movie Forest Gump came out. It is a really fun place to eat at. While you are waiting for your table you are asked trivia about the movie, and all the waiters and waitress and really nice. Because it was Jess’ Birthday, our waitress made her stand up on her chair while she and a group of other waiters very loudly and enthusiastically sang a birthday song to her.
I hope you like the photos I’ve been putting up, I’ve put a couple of the fire works on but haven’t got my boating ones or Jess’ birthday photo’s back yet. So check back in a couple of days and I’ll have them up.
Well I better go. Lots of Love and Hugs.
God Bless
Anna
