August 2005
Hi, hope you are all well. I can’t believe I have been here for 5 months now! In a month I’ll be halfway through my year and it will be all downhill from there on. I have had quite an eventful, busy past month. On the Tuesday before we were going up to Maine for visiting day, Bradley tripped over at camp and bit THROUGH the top left hand corner of his lip! There was blood everywhere and he ended up getting 5 or 6 stitches. The stitches were only in for just over a week and there is no visible scar - which is good.
We left for Maine at 5:00am on Friday 22nd July. It took us 7 hours, including a stop for breakfast to get to Maine and we were in 5 different states in that time! (New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine) As soon as you get out of NY the scenery changes and becomes a lot nicer, although driving on Interstates does get quite boring. We were staying in Portland, so on Friday afternoon we went into town and had a look around; we also went to the Maine Children’s Museum where Ali and Bradley had a great time. On Saturday morning we traveled for about an hour to get to Naples where Camp Mataponi (said Mata-po-nai) is. It was great to see Emily in her camp environment on visiting day; she is really enjoying her time and has signed up to go back next year. Emily showed us all camp, and we watched her play tennis, water-ski (which she learnt to do at camp), and rock-climb. The lake was also open after lunch so we all went swimming - the water was cleaner and warmer than I expected. Since the day was so hot it was nice and refreshing. Sunday we came back to NY through Boston as Suzie’s sister lives there. Boston is a really pretty city, I’m really looking forward to going back next month for a 2 day tour. Emily arrives home this Friday - it’s hard to believe she’s been away for 7 weeks!
This last weekend I went with Heather (an Au Pair from Rotorua) up to Niagara Falls. We went with a company based in Chinatown so it was relatively cheap but the majority of the tour was in Chinese! Luckily the most important things were translated. Niagra Falls is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!! - No surprise its one of the 7 wonders of the world. We left at 8:30am from Chinatown, Manhattan and had a couple of stops before arriving at the Corning Museum of Glass (at about 3:00pm) which was quite cool; there were glass blowing demonstrations - the vase they were making while we were there was in the shape of a cartoon mouse and it was quite cool seeing how the made the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. From there it was another 2.5hours to Niagra Falls. We had dinner in Buffalo before checking into our Hotel Room in the Niagra Falls township. Once everyone was checked in; we walked for about 5 minutes to get to the falls, and since it was night time they have the falls lit up with different coloured lights which change randomly. It was really strange to me that completely surrounding such a natural beauty were sky-rise buildings, casinos, and a mini carnival which sold food, souvenirs, plus had mini golf, karaokee, and this thing called Flight of Angels. Which is kind of like a hot air balloon, but it uses helium instead of hot air. Heather and I decided to go on it as it cost $15 for 20 minutes and it went up reasonably high - 400 feet (sorry don’t know how many metres that is!) We got back to our hotel room just after midnight and went to bed. Were woken up at 7:00am this morning and we left the hotel at 8:00am. We went to Goat Island which is the Island that separates the American Falls from the Canadian Falls (Niagra Falls is made up of 3 waterfalls the Canadian, the American, and the Bridal Vail which is almost connected to the American). We went from Goat Island to the Maid of the Mist boat ride which was awesome! You go right up into the mist and get soaking wet! We left Niagra Falls just before mid-day and got back to NYC at about 7:30pm; there wasn't as much traffic on the way back as the way up which surprised me a bit, since it was a Sunday evening and that is when people head back to the city after being away for the weekend. It was an amazing experience and should definitely be on people’s to do list when they visit the USA.
Well I better go. Lots of Love and Hugs.
God Bless
